COLOMBO: India announced on Monday that it had sent around 40,000 metric tonnes of petrol to Sri Lanka, just days after sending 40,000 metric tonnes of diesel under the Indian credit line to help alleviate the island nation's acute fuel deficit. Last month, India offered an additional USD 500 million credit line to Sri Lanka to help the neighbouring country acquire fuel after its foreign exchange reserves plunged drastically in recent months, prompting a depreciation of its currency and spiralling inflation.

"Commitment was kept!! Around 40000 MT of petrol aided by India arrived in Colombo today "In a tweet, the Indian High Commission announced.

Under the credit line arrangement, India sent another 40,000 metric tonnes of diesel to Sri Lanka on Saturday.

Due to a petrol and diesel shortage, the Sri Lankan government has instructed non-essential staff to stay at home. Lawmakers have requested that the Parliament Speaker provide them with hotel accommodations because they are unable to get to parliament from their residences as they cannot reach parliament from their homes in the absence of transport fuel.
