NEW DELHI: India is nearing the completion of replacing military personnel stationed at aviation platforms in the Maldives by May 10th. The smooth logistical arrangements have pleased both parties, ensuring a seamless transition.

In a recent meeting in New Delhi, the High-level Core Group between the Maldives and India emphasized their commitment to bilateral cooperation. They discussed various areas including development and defence cooperation, highlighting the strong strategic partnership. It was agreed that Indian military personnel would be replaced by civilian experts, a process initiated two months ago. These experts will manage the operation and maintenance of helicopters and aircraft crucial for humanitarian and medical evacuation services in the Maldives.

While President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration had previously hinted at strengthening ties with China, they have set a deadline for the withdrawal of Indian military troops. Despite this, India remains dedicated to supporting the Maldives’ socio-economic development, as shown by increased budget allocations for development assistance in the interim budget for 2024-25.

The decision to replace military personnel with civilian experts underscores India's commitment to enhancing the Maldives' capabilities in aviation and disaster response. By entrusting the operation and maintenance of essential aircraft to civilian professionals, both countries aim to ensure the efficient delivery of humanitarian aid and medical services during times of crisis. This move reflects a strategic shift towards civilian-led management, facilitating long-term stability and cooperation between India and the Maldives.
