India is rapidly progressing in 6G technology, having already made significant strides after successfully deploying 5G across the nation. The country now ranks among the top six globally in filing 6G-related patents. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has envisioned India as a key player in the design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030.

As part of the ‘Bharat 6G Vision,’ the government is currently reviewing 470 proposals aimed at accelerating research on the 6G ecosystem. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has funded two next-generation testbeds to boost 6G research efforts.

A government-led panel has projected that India could secure 10% of global 6G patents and contribute one-sixth of the global standards within the next three years. Several initiatives, such as ‘Bharat 6G Vision’ and ‘Bharat 6G Alliance,’ have already been launched, supported by a robust patent and intellectual property rights (IPR) framework and the establishment of testbeds.

Industry experts emphasize the importance of widespread access to wireline and intelligent wireless broadband networks with reliable connectivity for India to establish itself as a deep-tech leader.

India is also hosting the World Telecom Standardisation Assembly (WTSA 2024) from October 14-24, marking the first time this global event is being held in the national capital. Telecom leaders, experts, and academia from over 190 countries are attending the 10-day event. The DoT highlighted that hosting this event provides India with a unique opportunity to influence the global telecom agenda as it prepares for advancements like 6G and beyond.

To further advance these efforts, the DoT has organized WTSA 2024 Outreach Sessions in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. These sessions offer students a platform to engage with industry experts and participate in knowledge-sharing activities.
