NEW DELHI: In response to the increasing unrest and law and order challenges in Bangladesh, the Indian government has established a dedicated committee to monitor the situation along the Indo-Bangladesh border, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Friday, August 9.

The primary role of this committee is to maintain open lines of communication with Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the safety of Indian citizens as well as minority communities in the neighboring country. The committee aims to foster cooperation and prevent any cross-border tensions from escalating.

The committee will be led by the Additional Director General (ADG) of the Border Security Force (BSF), Eastern Command. Other members include the Inspector General (IG) of BSF Frontier HQ South Bengal, IG of BSF Frontier HQ Tripura, a Member of the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) specializing in Planning & Development, and the Secretary of LPAI, as confirmed by the Home Ministry.

In a related development, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus took the oath on Thursday as the head of a new interim government in Bangladesh. His leadership follows weeks of student protests that led to the resignation and flight of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India.

After ruling Bangladesh for 20 out of the last 30 years, Sheikh Hasina fled the country after securing her fourth consecutive election win in January. Her sudden departure has stirred mixed reactions, with some Bangladeshis expressing anger towards India.

Currently residing in the New Delhi area, Hasina's future travel plans remain uncertain, with rumors suggesting a possible move to Britain. Meanwhile, the situation in Bangladesh continues to deteriorate, prompting hundreds of Bangladeshi Hindus to seek refuge in India after facing attacks on their homes and businesses.

The student-led protests that ousted Hasina initially began as a movement against government job quotas but quickly grew into widespread demonstrations against economic challenges and political repression.
