SPAIN: The External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar is currently on a diplomatic visit to Spain till January 14, making it his prime visit to Spain as the Foreign Minister.
During his visit to Spain, India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, announced that 2026 will be celebrated as a DUAL YEAR by India and Spain. This initiative aims to strengthen ties by highlighting shared interests in culture, tourism, and artificial intelligence (AI).
Speaking to members of the Indian community on January 14, Dr. Jaishankar lauded their role in building a positive image of India worldwide and emphasized the expanding potential of India-Spain relations.
Dr. Jaishankar described the Indian Diaspora in Spain as a vital link in fostering bilateral ties. He praised their contributions to the local economy and society, underlining their importance in shaping India’s foreign policy goals. Reflecting on the success of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez last year, he called it a pivotal step in strengthening the partnership between the two nations.
The trade relations between India and Spain are already significant, with an annual exchange of USD 10 billion across industries such as railways, clean technology, drones, and space exploration. Expressing confidence in the future, Dr. Jaishankar remarked, “The USD 0 billion trade we see today will grow further. Global developments, especially those affecting supply chains, will bring us even closer.”
Highlighting the strong reputation of the Indian Diaspora, he shared that Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares had commended their contributions. “The Indian community here has an excellent image. They are actively contributing to Spain’s economy and society, and Indian talent is highly valued,” Dr. Jaishankar stated. He further emphasized the role of the Diaspora in deepening international relationships, adding, “When our Diaspora creates a positive image of India, it builds a foundation for stronger partnerships.”
A major highlight of Dr. Jaishankar’s visit was the announcement of the Dual Year in 2026. This initiative will focus on celebrating culture, boosting tourism, and advancing artificial intelligence between the two countries. “Through 2025, we will work diligently to ensure that 2026 becomes a year of celebration and collaboration,” he said.
This visit, Dr. Jaishankar’s first to Spain as India’s Foreign Minister, is part of his broader diplomatic agenda.
