India stands at No:8, most impacted by Terrorism, Global Terrorism Index 2020

The Global Terrorism Index 2020 informs Afghanistan as the most affected by terrorism followed by Iraq. The GTI 2020 has given Number 8 place for native India. South Asia occupies the second place for a second consecutive year as the most impacted region by terrorism in 2019. South Asia recorded more death than any other region in the world, in spite of improvements in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, said Global Terrorism Index 2020 report by The Institute for Economic & Peace. India with a score of 7.353 is at number 8 on the index measuring the impact of terrorism. Afghanistan with 9.592 score tops the list of most impacted of the 163 countries whereas Ira8 with 8.682 stands at No: 2 followed by Nigeria at No: 3 with a score of 8.314. 

Terrorism related deaths fell by 15% in 2019 in comparison with 2018. The global death is declining in consecutive years which was peak in 2014. Globally 63 countries reported at least one death in 2019, 17 countries over 100 deaths whereas Afghanistan and Nigeria recorded over 1,000 deaths. The four terrorist groups responsible for the most (55% , or 7,578) deaths due to terrorism in the region in 2019 were Taliban, Boko Haram, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, and Al-Shabab. India reported 558 terrorist attacks in 2019, recording 277 deaths. Fourteen of 35 active terrorist groups in India were responsible for incidents in 2019. “Maoists, the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) were responsible for over two thirds of the total deaths and almost half of the total attacks,” the report said.

The global economic impact of terrorism was estimated at $26.4 billion in 2019, 25% less from $35.1 billion in 2018. The impact includes “the direct cost of terrorism deaths, injuries, and property damage, as well as the indirect costs from deaths, injuries, property damage, and GDP losses”. India records decrease in economic impact of terrorism while the neighbour Sri Lanks records largest increase of $954 million.
