DHAKA: India's U-19 women's team got off to a great start in the SAFF U-19 Women's Championship here, thumping Sri Lanka 5-0 to earn their first points. In a late Monday evening encounter, Nitu Linda scored two goals for the Alex Ambrose-coached team, while Santosh, Karen Estrocio, and Priyanka Devi each scored one goal to complete the rout for India.

India took the lead early away, with Santosh putting the ball in the net in the second minute. TJN Dewage, the Sri Lankan goalkeeper, had stopped the midfielder's strike. Santosh, on the other hand, was able to grab the rebound and slam it into the net.

Three minutes later, Karen Estrocio doubled the lead by nodding the ball into an empty net after it bounced off the goalkeeper and into her direction. On the left wing, Karen and Anju NA worked well together to produce another chance that was thwarted. However, wayward balls continued to land at Indian feet, only to be blocked again and again until Nitu Linda finally jinked past her marker and slotted it in.

With a three-goal advantage, the Indian women settled into the game wonderfully, maintaining long periods of possession and seeking for ways to break the Sri Lankan defence down.
