New Delhi: India has achieved another major milestone in the field of the supersonic missile. The Supersonic Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) was successfully tested from Havilar Island off the Odisha coast today. During this test, the missile met its standards and operational procedures and successfully penetrated the target.

Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has congratulated the scientists of Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO) on this success. The Defense Minister said in a tweet that, "DRDO has successfully tested the Supersonic Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART). This will prove to be another important technique towards building stand-off capability in anti-sub-marine warfare. I congratulate DRDO scientists and other stakeholders for this achievement".

This missile would prove to be extremely useful in anti-submarine warfare (ASW) operations outside the range of torpedoes. This test of the missile has been monitored by different systems (sea-based vessels, coast and telemetry stations). Earlier this month, DRDO successfully tested a laser guided anti-tank missile. This missile has been tested from MBT Arjun tank.
