NEW DELHI: Anurag Singh Thakur, the minister of youth affairs and sports, has declared that India will submit a bid to host the Olympic Games in 2036. During the IOC session in Mumbai in September 2023, the minister said, the government will provide a roadmap to the IOC's full membership.

Talking to a newspaper, Mr. Thakur said that the government will support the Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) quest to host the games. Ahmedabad is likely going to serve as the games' "host city," said the minister, who also said that Gujarat already has a top-notch sporting infrastructure. The minister said that  if India can successfully host the G20 Presidency, the government can contribute to hosting the Olympics and will do so alongside the IOA.

The minister claimed that given the country's extensive efforts to promote sports, there is no justification for India to reject hosting the 2036 Olympics. He said that India is fully prepared to hold the Olympic games.

He said Gujarat can be a possible venue to host the Olympic Games in 2036. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, which has state-of-the-art facilities, is the biggest cricket stadium globally.
