India to Open Two New Consulates in Russia, Announces PM Modi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that India will open two new consulates in Russia--one in Kazan and another in Yekaterinburg. He shared this news while addressing the Indian community in Moscow. Currently, India has an embassy in Moscow and consulates in St. Petersburg and Vladivostok.

Modi is on a two-day visit to Russia and Austria, marking his first trip to Russia since the conflict in Ukraine began in 2021. During his visit to Moscow, Modi announced the new consulates and discussed strengthening strategic partnerships in defense, energy, trade, investment, and connectivity with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

This visit also includes Modi's first meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin since December 2023. The leaders are expected to discuss the Ukraine conflict, focusing on dialogue and diplomacy.

Additionally, Modi will be honored with Russia's highest state award, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle. This prestigious award, established in 1698 by Tsar Peter the Great, recognizes individuals for their significant contributions to enhancing bilateral relations. Modi was announced as a recipient in 2019 for his efforts in strengthening India-Russia relations.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi  was honored with the 'Order of St. Andrew the Apostle' at St. Catherine's Hall in the Moscow Kremlin. This prestigious award, bestowed upon him in 2019, recognizes his significant contributions to strengthening the privileged strategic partnership and fostering friendly relations between Russia and India.

The award acknowledges Prime Minister Modi's significant role in enhancing the special strategic partnership between Russia and India, as well as fostering friendly relations between the two countries.
