India will deploy S-400s as China activates its air defense system with more jet swarms

Delhi: The second squadron of the S-400 Triumph Indian Air Force (IAF) air defense system will go into service on the northern frontier within the next two to three months, Times of India reported on Monday, citing unnamed sources.

As per the $5.43 billion deal with Russia, India got its first squadron of S-400 air missile defense systems in December. Russia also delivered a simulator and other equipment for the training of the IAF S-400 Air Defense Missile Squadron in April this year.

Two regiments of the S-400 system will be placed on India's northern borders, and the other two will be used to defend the country's strategic assets in as-yet-unknown cities.

The 16th round of Corps Commander level talks held on 17 July stalled with the commitment of both sides to maintain status quo in the disputed areas of Ladakh sector. Both sides accused each other of encroaching upon each other's land in violation of the 1993 and 2005 border treaties.

The video of the extensive military exercise in the Tibet region adjoining the Ladakh region was recently made public by the Chinese Army. Over 50,000 troops and state-of-the-art weapons have been deployed by Delhi and Beijing in the western sector of the LAC over the past two years.

Beijing also has plans to build a new highway that will be located near the Line of Actual Control currently connecting Tibet and Xinjiang.

The border standoff between the Chinese People's Liberation Army and the Indian Army has been going on since June 2020 over the construction of infrastructure in the Ladakh region. Twenty Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers were killed in a bloody clash, marking the first time since 1975 the deaths at the border.
