The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued an order under Section 69A of the IT Act, 2000 directing Wikipedia to remove the link from its platform that has shown an incorrect map of Jammu and Kashmir, according to sources. A Twitter user noted the mistake and highlighted that the Wikipedia page on India-Bhutan relationship had incorrectly depicted the map of Jammu Kashmir, and asked the government to take action.
Sources said taking knowledge of the matter, the ministry has issued an order on November 27, 2020 directing Wikipedia to remove the map as it violated the territorial integrity and sovereignty of India. If Wikipedia does not follow the union government's direction, then the government can take serious legal action against Wikipedia including blocking access to the entire platforms as per section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. To be noted, So far, Wikipedia has not corrected the map.
Similar act, in the month of November, the Centre had issued a notice to the microblogging platform Twitter for showing Leh as part of Jammu and Kashmir instead of Union Territory of Ladakh. The ministry issued a notice to the Global Vice President of the micro-blogging platform on November 9. Following it, Twitter had removed the People’s Republic of China, but it has not yet corrected the map to show Leh as part of the Union Territory of Ladakh. Section 69A of the IT Act pertains to the power to issue directions for blocking for public access of any information through any computer resource.
