New Delhi: Other social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook have so far failed to follow the guidelines issued by the Central government even after getting a deadline of May 26, 2021. In such a situation, legal action may be taken against them if they continue. It may be mentioned that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India had on 25th February this year given 3 months time to all social media companies to follow the new rules.

In this, the Government of India had directed the companies to follow the rules under the Intermediate Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code Rules, 2021. But many social media platforms failed to do so. Top sources say, "If social media companies do not comply with the rules, they may lose their status and security as middlemen. At the same time, as per the existing laws of India, they may be responsible for criminal action. ”

According to reports, the Central Government in its directive to the companies had asked such social media platforms to deploy three officers (resident grievance officer, chief compliance officer and nodal contact person) under the three-tier self-regulatory framework in the country, which have accountability in each case, as well as to dispose of any complaint immediately. In addition, rules such as monitoring of objectionable content and removal of that content were also asked to be enforced.
