Indian Navy gets its fifth Scorpene- class submarine 'INS Vagir'

Defence public sector undertaking (PSU) Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDSL) handed over the Indian Navy's fifth Scorpene-class submarine. Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik launched the fifth scorpene class submarine 'Vagir' of Project 75 in Arabian sea waters at Mazagaon Dock through video conferencing.

The defence PSU is involved in the construction and deliveries of submarines and ships over the last couple of years to meet the Indian Navy requirements. The first of the six Scorpene-class submarines assigned the task to build to MDSL , INS Kalvari, was launched in 2015 and commissioned into service in late 2017. The Scorpene class of submarines can undertake multifarious tasks including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. MDSL along with French collaborator Naval Group (previously known as DCNS) for submarine technology transfer under Project 75 (P75). The deal value is over Rs 23,000 crore.

MDSL is delivering one submarine every year to the Indian Navy since 2017. INS Khanderi was launched in 2017 followed by INS Karanj in 2018 and INS Vela in 2019. The Covid-19 induced disruption, has become a setback of about three months in the development of the fifth submarine, INS Vagir, said officials. The Indian Navy PSU believes it will complete the deal by 2022. PSU said deliveries of all the contracted submarines will be given by 2022, Last delivery by 2022 is the last of the six submarine, INS Vagsheer.
