Indian Navy to Commission Latest Survey Vessel Sandhayak in Vizag on February 3

The Indian Navy is ready to commission its newest survey vessel, Sandhayak, in Vizag on Saturday, February 3rd. This ship is expected to enhance the Navy's surveillance capabilities in important waterways. Distinguished guests including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, and Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar will attend the event.

Sandhayak is the first of four survey vessels (large) being built at M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, and its formal induction into the Navy will be marked during the ceremony, according to a Navy spokesperson.

Having completed a rigorous trial program both in the harbor and at sea, Sandhayak was delivered to the Indian Navy on December 4.

The primary function of the ship will be to conduct comprehensive hydrographic surveys of ports, harbors, navigational channels, coastal areas, and deep seas to ensure safe marine navigation. Additionally, it will be capable of various naval operations.

Equipped with advanced hydrographic equipment such as deep and shallow water multibeam echo-sounders, an autonomous underwater vehicle, a remotely operated vehicle, data acquisition and processing systems, and satellite-based positioning systems, Sandhayak is set for its tasks.

This ship, reincarnated from the former Sandhayak which was decommissioned in June 2021, is powered by two diesel engines and can achieve speeds exceeding 18 knots. With a length of 110 meters, a displacement of 3400 tons, and 80% indigenous content, Sandhayak showcases India's growing shipbuilding capabilities in line with the national vision of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat.

According to the Navy's statement, Sandhayak also symbolizes a developed India, aligned with the national vision for Amrit Kaal.
