NEW DELHI: The latest indigenous guided missile warship of the Indian Navy, INS Mormugao, made considerable progress by successfully catching a supersonic target that was skimming the surface of the ocean.

The phrase "sea-skimming" in naval warfare is a tactical maneuver used by some missiles or aircraft to fly at a low altitude while closely following the curve of the ocean's surface.

This method is used to reduce the radar signature and improve the likelihood of avoiding enemy radar systems. As they normally fly between a few metres to a few dozen metres above the ocean, sea-skimming missiles and aircraft are difficult for radar systems to precisely track.

These platforms take use of the "ground clutter" phenomenon, where radar signals bounce off the water's surface and make it impossible to distinguish between the incoming danger and the surrounding surroundings, by hugging the sea surface. By increasing the likelihood of a successful target engagement and decreasing the reaction time for defensive measures, sea-skimming capabilities offer a substantial tactical advantage.

Naval forces must have sophisticated detection, tracking, and interception capabilities in order to successfully counter threats that include sea-skimming.

About INS Mormugao: INS Mormugao is part of the Visakhapatnam-class destroyers, which are the largest destroyers ever built in India. These destroyers are designed to operate in both blue water and littoral environments, giving the Indian Navy increased flexibility and power projection capabilities.

The warship is equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensor systems, making it a formidable asset for the Indian Navy. It features advanced surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, anti-submarine warfare capabilities, and a sophisticated radar system. INS Mormugao is also equipped with a multi-function surveillance radar, allowing it to detect and track multiple targets simultaneously.

In addition to its offensive capabilities, INS Mormugao has excellent self-defense systems. It is equipped with decoy launchers and advanced electronic warfare systems to counter threats from enemy ships, aircraft, and submarines. The ship's advanced propulsion system provides it with high maneuverability and endurance, enabling it to operate effectively in various maritime conditions.

INS Mormugao also has provisions for carrying and operating a helicopter, further enhancing its surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. It can support a range of missions, including anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, and anti-submarine warfare operations.
