New Delhi: The Indian Railways’ ambitious plan to electrify its full network by 2023-24 is in completion. The national transport company has successfully completed electrification of 81% of its track.  This step will help deduce e consumption of fossil fuels and save the country hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

The Indian Railways  announced on Thursday that it had electrified 1,223 route kilometres (RKMs) through the end of October of the fiscal year 2022–23 (FY23), compared to 895 RKMs during the same time of FY2021-22. According to the report, electrification increased 36.64% greater than the similar data from the prior year.

According to a statement from the ministry of railways, Indian Railways began an ambitious plan to electrify its entire broad-gauge network, which would not only result in better fuel energy usage resulting in increased throughput, reduced fuel expenditure, as well as savings in precious foreign exchange.

The railways claimed that in 2021–2022, a record 6,366 RKMs of Indian Railways were electrified. Previously, the maximum electrification for 2020–21 was 6,015 RKMs.

According to the announcement, 53,470 BG RKMs, or 82.08 percent of the whole BG network, had been electrified as of October 31 out of 65,141 RKMs of the IR's BG network (including Konkan Railway Corporation Limited).
80 percent, or 52,247 km (32,465 mi), of the total broad-gauge route kilometres have been electrified as of April 1, 2022, according to IR. All of Indian Railway's electrified tracks utilise 25 kV 50 Hz AC traction. On February 3, 1925, the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPRfirst )'s electric train travelled at 1500 V DC between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Kurla on the Harbour Line, marking the beginning of Indian railway electrification.

According to statistics recently issued by the Ministry, 14 railway stations are currently in the tendering stage for refurbishment and are likely to be granted in the next five months. 40 railway stations are currently being redeveloped to provide modern amenities.
