Indian student shot dead in Toronto, EAM Jaishankar expresses sorrow

TORONTO – A 21-year-old Indian student was fatally shot at the entrance to a Toronto subway station.  Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar expressed his sorrow at the killing. "I am deeply saddened by this unfortunate event. "My heartfelt sympathies to the family," Jaishankar wrote on Twitter.

Kartik Vasudev was shot multiple times near the entrance to the Sherbourne subway station, which is close to the Indian Consulate in Toronto, at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

According to Toronto Police, officers responded to a radio complaint for a gunshot at the Sherbourne TTC Subway station. An off-duty paramedic originally attended to the victim, who had multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the hospital and died as a result of his injuries.

Police are searching for a black individual who was spotted walking away from the crime scene with a weapon. The attack's motivation is unknown.

Vasudev, who was enrolled in Seneca College's marketing management degree, had arrived in Canada in January.

The Indian Consulate tweeted on Friday, expressing sorrow at the killing: "We are shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Indian student Kartik Vasudev in a gunshot in Toronto yesterday. We've reached out to the family and will offer all feasible aid in the repatriation of mortal remains as soon as possible." Seneca College said in a statement, "The terrible death of Kartik Vasudev, a first-semester Marketing Management student, has shocked the Seneca community. Mr. Vasudev's family, friends, and classmates are in our thoughts. Students and staff will have access to counselling services."
