NEW YORK : The eminent Indian-American academician Sunil Kumar has been appointed the next president of Massachusetts-based private research institution Tufts University.

Sunil  Kumar, Provost and Senior Vice President for academic affairs at Johns Hopkins University, succeeds President Anthony P. Monaco on July 1, 2023.

Peter Dolan, Chair of the Board of Trustees and Chair of the presidential search committee, said that Sunil Kumar "brings to Tufts a lifelong dedication to excellence in higher education and an incredibly excellent record as a leader, teacher, and colleague."

"He will succeed President Monaco admirably, who has improved Tufts in many ways over the previous 11 years. Sunil's dedication to civic participation, research, and learning will support Tufts' goal of making the world a better place "Dolan stated in a Thursday-released university statement.
At Johns Hopkins, Kumar is in charge of the nine schools' academic missions. He has prioritised interdisciplinary research and education, improving the student experience, and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
"I could not have done anything differently because I am the son of a police officer. Therefore, I do not view affordability as a purely theoretical idea. I aspire to serve as an illustration of someone who benefited from an establishment extending its doors wide "In a video that was uploaded to the Tufts website, Kumar noted. "And I want even more people to get the same chance. Diversity and inclusivity are essential principles" he said.

His academic career started by teaching at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he was later the Fred H. Merrill Professor of Operations, Information and Technology. The University of Chicago Booth School of Business appointed him dean. He was appointed senior vice president and provost at Johns Hopkins in 2016.

Kumar, whose father was a police officer was born and reared in India and received his engineering bachelor's degree from Mangalore University in 1990. In 1992, the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore awarded him a master's degree in computer science and automation. He was hired while he was there for an electrical engineering doctoral programme. In 1996, Kumar earned a PhD from the University of Illinois.
