New Delhi: On Sunday, India's active COVID infection tally reached 4,049, with the health ministry recording 756 new cases, according to reports. As of 8 a.m., the ministry's updated data also indicated five reported deaths. Two deaths each were recorded in Kerala and Maharashtra, while one was reported in Jammu and Kashmir.

This increase in cases follows a significant drop in daily cases to double digits on December 5, 2023. However, the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions contributed to a rise in cases once again. December 31, 2023, marked the day when the country reported the highest single-day increase of 841 cases. Official sources mentioned that about 92 percent of individuals on the active cases list are recovering at home under home isolation.

As per the latest data collected, the JN-1 variant, as reported, is not leading to a substantial increase in new cases or a surge in mortality and hospitalization cases. Among the three waves of the pandemic in India since the virus outbreak, the highest number of daily cases and deaths were recorded during the Delta wave in April-June 2021.
