Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata

It was established in 1933, one of India's oldest art societies, the Academy of Fine Arts attracts art lovers from different corners of the state and beyond. This academy boasts of having the largest gallery space in the country with eight spacious galleries on the ground floor itself. The entire first floor has been thoughtfully converted into a museum that exhibits an extensive collection of arts of different types, artists and ages.
In the Gallery of Contemporary Art, you will find exquisite paintings and sculptures of India from 1900 to the present day. Rare and old textiles in the Gallery of Old Textiles, the Ram-Sita series of 18 miniature paintings in the Gallery of Miniature Paintings and exclusive carpets in the Carpet Gallery are the proud possessions of the academy.

The Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh

The museum's greatest treasure is the Indian share of Lahore's Central Museum collection, which includes over 600 Gandhara sculptures, nearly 450 miniature paintings and exhibits in stucco, ivory, ceramic and fabric. The gallery of miniatures showcases various schools, such as Rajasthani, Sikh, Pahari and Mughal styles, while a contemporary gallery houses an eclectic collection of modern painting and sculpture, including the works of Indian luminaries Sobha Singh, Amrita Sher Gil and Vivan Sundaram. Amongst the manuscripts housed here is a collection of Adi Granths, handwritten by Kashmiri artists, including one that bears the Nisan (signature) of Guru Teg Bahadur. Two separate wings of house the Chandigarh Architecture Museum and the Natural History Museum. The former includes an exhibition featuring plans and models of Chandigarh, along with photographs and documents from the life of Le Corbusier.

 Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai

It was established in 1952. Named after Sir Cowasji's late son Jehangir, the gallery has hosted the works of famous artists such as M. F. Hussain and S. H. Raza. A haven for art lovers, this destination is well known for its splendid art exhibits. Such is the prestige of this art venue that artists have to wait for as long as two years before they can open their exhibits here. The premises of Jehangir Art Gallery were earlier an enormous mansion. At present, the gallery consists of a total of four halls with all the possible facilities to showcase various mediums of visual art, namely Exhibition Gallery, Auditorium Hall, Terrace Art Gallery for photography and visual art and the Hirji Jehangir Gallery. The esteemed gallery hosts as many as 300 shows per annum. An interesting phenomenon here is that artists, who cannot make it to the gallery, display their work right outside the gallery, on the pavement.

National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi

India is a country of art lovers, and National Gallery of Modern Arts (NGMA) is no less than heaven for them. Following its motto is to deliverer an excellent world of art to its visitors.  It was established on March 29, 1954, by the Indian Government. The gallery helps people to connect the works of modern art with their vital passions of the human spirit. The Gallery houses a collection of more than 14,000 artworks which includes work that is as old as a hundred and fifty years. As you visit the modern art museum, you get a chance to witness the creativity of Thomas Daniell, Abanindranath Tagore, Raja Ravi Verma, Gaganendranath Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, and many other foreign sculptors and artists. It showcases a perfect blend of modern and contemporary arts in the form of visual galleries and different exhibitions. Indian Museum, Kolkata

It is oldest museum in the world and the largest museum in India with its foundation stone laid in the year 1814. It has exhibits of some finest collection of artefacts that include, armours, fossils, skeletons, antiques, ornaments, Egyptian mummies and contemporary paintings as well as paintings from the Mughal era.Indian museum also boasts to have one of the most unique assemblages of coins and sculptures that date back to the second century AD. There are sculptures from Gandhara School of Art and architectural remains from Bodhgaya too, which are displayed in separate galleries. The museum is popularly called as ‘Jaadu Ghar’. Museums are a treasure trove for all history buffs. The Indian Museum has a total of 35 galleries divided into 6 categories namely Anthropology, Art, Archaeology, Geology, Zoology and Economic Botany.
