New Delhi: Cyrus Poonawalla, chairman of the vaccine manufacturer Serum Institute of India, said on Monday that the poor countries of the world are using the vaccines made by the company. The reason for this is the cheapness of the vaccine and it is also being provided at the cost of 'a cup of tea'. Poonawalla said the above at the Pune International Business Summit organized by the industry body Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA).
Poonawalla was also honored for receiving the Padma Bhushan award in the program. He said that two-thirds of the world's population has been given one or more of the company's vaccines. Poonawalla said that, 'Most of our vaccines are being used by poor countries. UNISEF and other charitable organizations have come forward to buy the vaccine. With the help of our staff and scientists, we have made it cheap and it is equal to the cost of a cup of tea.
Let us tell you that SII was started by Adar Poonawalla's father Cyrus Poonawalla in the year 1966. Coming from a Parsi family, Cyrus founded this company with $12,000. His idea was to make a vaccine from horse serum. Soon, SII became one of the largest vaccine manufacturers in the world. Today, 1.5 billion vaccines are prepared and sold by this institute all over the world. SII currently produces every vaccine related to vaccination of children with polio, diphtheria, tetanus and smallpox, from BCG vaccine.
