New Delhi: The country's first female cardiologist doctor SI Padmavati died on Saturday at the age of 103 due to coronavirus. She was admitted to the National Heart Institute (NHI) 11 days ago. Dr. OP Yadav, CEO of the hospital said that Dr. Padmavati had a serious infection in both the lungs due to which she died. Dr. Padmavati has been cremated at the Punjabi Bagh crematorium in West Delhi. The great cardiologist led an active and healthy life until her last days.

By the end of 2015, she was working 12 hours a day, five days a week at NHI. She founded NHI in 1981. It was because of her contribution that she was given the title of 'Godmother of Cardiology'. Dr. Padmavati established the first cardiac catheterization lab of North India in 1954 at Lady Hardinge Medical College. In 1967, she took over as Director-Principal of Maulana Azad Medical College and also served in Irwin and GB Pant hospitals.

It was here that she started the first DM course in cardiology, the first coronary care unit and the first coronary care van in the country. Along with this, she established the All India Heart Foundation in 1962 and the National Heart Institute in 1981. The Government of India awarded Dr. Padmavati with the Padma Bhushan in 1967 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1992.
