India’s New Ambassador to Brazil: Who Has Been Appointed?

Dinesh Bhatia, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 1992 batch, has been appointed as India’s new Ambassador to Brazil, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on Monday.

Currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Argentina, Bhatia assumed this role on August 21, 2019. He was also accredited to Uruguay and Paraguay until February 2022. Before his tenure in Argentina, Bhatia held several important positions, including Consul General of India in Toronto and Ambassador to Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, and Liberia. Additionally, he has served in various Indian missions, including those in Madrid, Kathmandu, and Kuwait.

Bhatia's diverse career also includes a secondment to the Department of Atomic Energy in Mumbai, as well as a role as Private Secretary to the Tourism Minister of India. He has worked across multiple divisions of the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.

A graduate of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie, and the Foreign Service Institute in New Delhi, Bhatia is also an alumnus of the National Defence College (NDC). He participated in the 4th Joint Civil-Military Course on National Security at LBSNAA.

Bhatia holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electronics and Communication from Delhi College of Engineering. Prior to joining the Civil Services, he worked in the private sector. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers and a member of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers.

In addition to his professional achievements, Bhatia is an author, with works including Devi Purana—A Rendition of Srimad Devi Bhagavatam, published by Bloomsbury in 2023, and Physics for Civil Services Prelims (1994).

Bhatia is married to Seema Bhatia, an Ayurvedic practitioner, psychologist, and hypnotherapist. They have a daughter and a son.
