New Delhi: The leaders of India's opposition alliance are set to convene this month to discuss seat-sharing for the upcoming elections, sources revealed. The meeting, anticipated to take place in Delhi within the next 10 days, is expected to involve challenging negotiations, especially for the Congress, following its recent electoral setbacks in three key states. Despite losing power in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh to the BJP and failing to regain control in Madhya Pradesh, the Congress has reportedly resolved differences with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

The meeting, originally planned for last week, was postponed after several leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav, Nitish Kumar, and Mamata Banerjee, hinted at their potential absence. The opposition alliance, formed to challenge the BJP in the upcoming national elections, has faced internal challenges with regional parties advocating for independent or majority-partner roles in the polls.

Akhilesh Yadav, a former Uttar Pradesh chief minister, has had differences with Congress leadership more than once in the past, including criticizing his ally over failed seat-sharing talks for the Madhya Pradesh election. The only silver lining for the Congress was winning in Telangana. The leaders aim to assess their shortcomings and determine the factors leading to their recent drubbing in the polls. Congress has also managed to resolve its differences with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, indicating his attendance at the first such meeting following the recent elections in five states.
