New Delhi: India's recent G20 presidency marked a significant milestone in its diplomatic journey, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar hailing the country's emergence as a global "friend" and "consensus builder." Speaking at a book launch event titled "India and the Future of G20: Shaping Policies for a Better World," Jaishankar emphasized India's pivotal role in steering the G20 towards consensus, particularly highlighted by the successful negotiation of a leaders' declaration amidst divisions over the Ukraine conflict.

Reflecting on the intense negotiations leading up to the consensus, Jaishankar described the last 48 hours before the agreement as particularly challenging yet ultimately fruitful in bridging differences over crucial issues.

The event, organized by the National University of Singapore's Institute of South Asian Studies, served as a platform to commemorate India's diplomatic achievements during its G20 presidency.

Jaishankar underscored the significance of India's leadership in the G20, citing it as a testament to the country's ability to foster friendships, build bridges, and navigate complex global challenges. He termed India's tenure as the G20 president as a "notable period" in its diplomatic history.

Highlighting key accomplishments during India's presidency, Jaishankar mentioned the reinstatement of multilateralism and the fulfillment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to Africa. Notably, India's initiative to include the African Union (AU) as a permanent member of the G20 was hailed as a major milestone, symbolizing the bloc's commitment to inclusivity and diversity.

The book launched at the event offers diverse perspectives from scholars, policy practitioners, and G20 sherpas, delving into critical themes such as the digital economy, resilient supply chains, environmental sustainability, climate finance, gender equality, and the future of multilateralism. It also explores the evolving role of the Global South in shaping global policies and agendas.
