India's Waaree Energies Plans 3-GW Solar Factory in Texas for US Expansion

Waaree Energies, an Indian solar products manufacturer, is set to establish a massive 3-gigawatt (GW) solar panel factory in Texas as part of its ambitious expansion plan in the United States. With aims to boost production to 5 GW by 2027, the Mumbai-based company revealed its vision to launch this significant project in Brookshore, near Houston.

This venture marks Waaree Energies' inaugural manufacturing base in the US and is scheduled to commence operations by the conclusion of next year. The factory intends to supply solar hardware to prominent solar entities, including SB Energy, backed by SoftBank, which boasts a development pipeline exceeding 15 GW. A long-term agreement has been inked to deliver products to SB Energy.

Anticipating an investment of up to USD 1 billion (EUR 913.7m) within the next four years, Waaree Energies aims to augment the factory's capacity, reaching an annual production capability of 5 GW in modules by 2027. Additionally, plans are underway to equip the site with an integrated solar cell facility anticipated to start operations by 2025.

Sunil Rathi, Interim CEO and board member of Waaree Solar Americas Inc., emphasized the significance of this move, stating, "By establishing the new facility in the Houston area, Waaree brings critical technologies that will enhance American solar production, reducing dependence on foreign sources and bolstering employment opportunities in the US." Rathi highlighted the commitment to source major manufacturing components domestically.

Waaree Energies highlighted its previous track record of delivering over 4 GW of modules produced in India to customers in the US. The company stands as the largest solar PV module manufacturer in India, boasting a capacity of 12 GW per year.
