Remember the 2019 Maharashtra elections... Then suddenly, in the assembly elections, freedom fighter Veer Savarkar had come up as a big issue. The BJP had then announced that it would take Veer Savarkar's name forward for Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour when it came to power in Maharashtra. The Congress had then raised several questions on Veer Savarkar and even called him a Mafiveer.

It was argued by Congress that Savarkar had written an apology to the British for coming back from Kalapani, so he did not deserve Bharat Ratna. But then a letter from Indira Gandhi shut the Congress' mouth.  Today, even though Congress is vocally opposing freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, the same Congress has rendered out a number of poems in his honour in the past. In 2019, Union Minister Jitendra Singh tweeted a letter written by the then PM Indira Gandhi in 1980.

In a tweet, Union Minister Jitendra Singh wrote that 'Indira Gandhi had written a letter to Veer Savarkar praising him while she was PM.' Meanwhile, another BJP leader Amit Malviya had claimed that Indira Gandhi had issued a postage stamp in honour of Savarkar and donated 11,000 rupees from her personal bank account to the Savarkar Trust. According to the claim, Indira Gandhi had ordered the Films Division to make a documentary on 'Great Freedom Fighter' and cleared it herself. But today, the Congress and Rahul Gandhi himself, who call Veer Savarkar a Mafiveer, must tell whether his grandmother Indira was right on this issue or Rahul himself?
