CHENNAI: two micro-industrial units in Coimbatore that were allegedly operating without a license have been sealed by the municipal corporation in TVS Nagar.
The decision by the Tamil Nadu Local Bodies Ombudsman on an allegation that the units were harming the environment prompted the action. However, the unit owners claimed that no investigation was made by civic officials.
Following accusations that the units were polluting the environment, the units were shut down. However, the owners claimed that no inquiry was done before the units were shut down by the civic officials. However, according to the in charge Coimbatore Municipal Commissioner Dr. Sharmila, neither of the units has a Dangerous and Offensive (D&O) trading licence. She also said that the units lack a permit from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
She added that a notification had been given to the units as early as 2020, but that it was abandoned because to the Covid epidemic. The Commissioner claimed that the corporation had given the units sufficient and additional time to fix their problems, but that they simply ignored the notification and did nothing, leading to the shutdown.
The units have been in operation for the previous 15 years, according to J. James, president of the Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Micro Enterprises, who also noted that the complainant does not live nearby.
