“Infertility” is the failure of a couple to conceive a pregnancy after trying for at least one full year. In primary infertility, pregnancy has never occurred. In secondary infertility, one or both members of the couple have previously conceived, but are unable to conceive again after a full year of trying. There are several reasons as to what causes infertility.

Ovulation Problems

This is a condition that prevents the release of a mature egg from the ovary. It could be due to irregular periods with either heavy or light bleeding.

Endometrial polyps

These are finger-like growth in the uterine cavity arising from the lining of the uterus, called endometrium. This decreases fertility by 50%.

Poor egg quality

The eggs are either damaged or develop chromosomal abnormalities that cannot sustain a pregnancy. This problem is usually an age-related one, as the egg quality declines significantly in the late 30s and early 40s.

Age factor

This is another factor that causes infertility. A woman's fertility starts to drop after she is about 32 years old, and continues to do so. A 50-year-old man is usually less fertile than a man in his 20s. Male fertility progressively drops after the age of 40.

Exposure to certain chemicals

Certain chemicals like pesticides, herbicides, metals (lead) and solvents have been linked to fertility problems in both men and women.

Eating disorders

Women who have poor eating habits and are underweight could have fertility problems.
