Trouble is increasing for Facebook's 'Instagram Kids' scheme for children. It is also being constantly opposed. In the same vein, the advocacy group Fairplay and Children's Screen Time Action Network (CSTAN), as well as pastors, rabbis and other religious leaders have written a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg requesting the company to permanently shut it down.

The letter, written by Fairplay, also gives signatures of more than 70 religious leaders. The letter also states that "the way the social media platform targets immature children for the purpose of making a profit and also does the work of collecting data unethically, it is not the right tool for the good of children."

In recent months, it has been leaked by Francis Hoggan, the whistleblower of Instagram and its parent company Facebook (Meta), after internal documents, questions are being raised about the mental health of the children, the body image of the playform and their safety. In December last year, a Senate panel on the online safety of children also questioned Instagram's head Adam Mossery. Meta is also being processed keeping in view the potential risk.

However, on the leaked document, Meta had clarified that these documents have been used to tarnish the image of the company. While defending its controversial 'Instagram Kids', the company had also said that its purpose is to give a safe and dedicated field to young users to interact with. According to media reports, the letter also mentions references made by religious leaders to the Bible, the Koran, Pope Francis and Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh.

It is worth mentioning that like other social media sites, Instagram has also banned the use of the platform for children under the age of 13. However, later the company had also planned to launch 'Instagram Kids' targeting 13-year-olds. There was a lot of opposition in the US, after which it has been stopped.
