Bangalore: The tagline "Reel it, feel it" on Instagram has led to repercussions for medical students at the Gadag Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Karnataka. A total of 38 college students faced penalties for recording reels on the hospital premises, resulting in a breach of hospital regulations.
The hospital management responded by extending their housemanship training period by an additional 10 days, considering the seriousness of the violation. Dr. Basavaraj Bommanhalli, Director of the Gadag Institute of Medical Sciences, expressed dismay over the incident, emphasizing the need for adherence to rules and regulations within the hospital premises. He stressed that any activities of this nature should have been conducted outside the hospital to avoid disruption to patient care.
Dr. Bommanhalli clarified that no permission had been granted for such activities, despite claims by the students that the recordings were intended for a pre-graduation ceremony. As a consequence, the housemanship tenure of the students, which was nearing completion within the next 10-20 days, has been extended by an additional 10 days.
This incident occurred shortly after the dismissal of a doctor by Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundurao for conducting a pre-wedding photoshoot inside the operation theatre of a government hospital in Chitradurga district. The situation gained attention when videos of medical students dancing to Hindi and Kannada songs in the hospital corridor surfaced on social media platforms.
The circulation of these videos prompted criticism from social media users, who questioned the students' dedication to their professional responsibilities.
