The United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 60/7 on November 1, 2005, designating January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day (IHRD).

The anniversary commemorates the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and is intended to remember Nazi victims. The same resolution advocates for the creation of educational programmes to commemorate the Holocaust and avoid future genocide.

The Holocaust, or Shoah, was considered the “Final Solution” by Nazi Germany which aimed for the complete elimination of the Jewish community within the country. According to reports, by the end of the gruesome act, around two-thirds of Europe’s Jewish population was killed.

Celebration Activities: On January 27, 2006, the first commemorative ceremony was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Approximately 2,200 people attended in person. Because the ceremony was televised live on television, many more people around the world were able to watch it. Every year, the UN Headquarters celebrates official commemorations. UN offices around the world, as well as other governmental offices, hold their own celebrations.
