International Human Solidarity Day is being celebrated today on 20 December. The purpose of this special day is to create awareness by telling people about the importance of unity in diversity. Unity is a union of interests, objectives or sympathy among the members of a group. In the Millennium Manifesto, world leaders agreed that unity is important for international relations in the 21st century. In light of globalization and growing inequality, the United Nations felt that strong international unity and cooperation were needed to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

The United Nations General Assembly announced on 2 December 2005 that International Unity Day will be celebrated on 20 December each year. It aims to raise awareness about the importance of advancing the international development agenda and promoting a global understanding of the value of human unity. On this day, the UN encourages new initiatives for poverty eradication with events held all over the world to promote the importance of solidarity. These events include presentations, seminars, conferences, and roundtable discussions. People are encouraged to debate on how to find innovative ways to promote unity and help eradicate poverty.
