New Delhi: Amid reports of oxygen shortage in hospitals amid the growing scourge of coronavirus infection, public sector oil companies Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) have started providing medical oxygen to the states badly affected by coronavirus in the form of medical oxygen produced in their refineries.

Earlier, private sector company Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has also started supplying oxygen to Maharashtra. IOC said in a statement that it has started supplying 150 tonnes of oxygen free of cost to different hospitals in Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab. The company said the first consignment of life-saving medical grade oxygen has been sent to Maha Durga Charitable Trust Hospital in New Delhi.

IOC said the demand for medical oxygen has increased rapidly amid the second wave of the corona. In this case, it has converted the high purity oxygen used in its Mono Ethelene Glycol (MEG) unit into medical-grade liquid oxygen at Panipat Refinery and Petrochemical complex in Haryana. In a separate statement, Bharat Petroleum Corporation has also said that it has started supplying 100 tonnes of oxygen free of cost.
