For users of the iPhone 16, iOS 18.2 adds a new feature called Visual Intelligence, which allows users to gather more information about their surroundings using the Camera Control. This update also expands the availability of Apple Intelligence to English-speaking countries such as the UK, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand.

New AI-Powered Features in iOS 18.2
Building on the groundwork laid by iOS 18.1, which is set to officially launch next week, iOS 18.2 introduces several creative tools. Image Playground enables users to create personalized images from text prompts, while Genmoji allows users to design custom emojis directly from the keyboard. Another notable addition, Image Wand, uses the Apple Pencil to convert rough sketches into polished images.

Enhanced Writing Tools and Siri with ChatGPT
This update significantly improves Writing Tools, introducing a new "Describe your change" feature. This allows users to specify their writing needs, whether they want the text to sound more formal or enthusiastic. The integration of ChatGPT offers users a new interface for content creation, making it easier to generate high-quality documents.

Siri also benefits from ChatGPT integration. If Siri encounters a request that it cannot handle—such as creating a detailed itinerary—it can now refer the task to ChatGPT and deliver the results directly to the user. However, users need to manually grant Siri access to ChatGPT for privacy reasons.

Expanded Availability and Visual Intelligence for iPhone 16 Users
While iOS 18.1 supports only U.S. English, iOS 18.2 broadens the reach of Apple Intelligence features to more regions, including the UK, Canada, and Australia. However, these features are not available in China and the EU due to regulatory issues.

Visual Intelligence, exclusive to iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, allows users to press the Camera Control on the lock screen, take a photo, and immediately learn more about their surroundings.

Developers can begin testing these new features through the betas of iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS 15.2 starting today. Although Apple has not announced an exact public release date for iOS 18.2, it is anticipated to launch by the end of the year. Additionally, Apple hinted that more features, including personal context awareness for Siri and AI-driven priority notifications, will be rolled out in early 2025.
