Theran: Iran has executed two men convicted of killing four police officers in a region that experienced a wave of violence in September of 2016; The judiciary made the announcement on Wednesday.

According to the judiciary's Mizan online website, two members of the Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice) terrorist organization Rashid Baloch and Ishaq Askani were hanged yesterday in Zahedan prison.

The group was formed in 2012 by former members of the extremist Sunni Muslim group Jaish al-Adl, which oversees a bloody insurgency in Sistan-Balochistan on Iran's border with Pakistan.

According to Mizan Online, two men were indicted for killing four police border guards and injuring several other officers in the southeastern province in 2016.

Clashes broke out in Zahedan after Friday prayers on September 30, according to officials, in which dozens of people, including six security personnel, were killed.

According to Iranian media outlets, Jaish al-Adl at the time claimed responsibility for the attack on a police station during the unrest.

But Maulvi Molawi Abdul Hameed, a prominent figure in the Sistan-Sunni Balochistan community, denied that Jaish al-Adl or any other group was responsible for the violence.

Area officials, including the police chief in Zahedan, fired two senior security officials following an investigation requested by Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi.

Two weeks had passed since the murder of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after she was detained by Tehran's ethics police for allegedly breaking Iran's strict dress code for women. Mahsa Amini was 22 years old at the time of her death.

Amnesty International, a rights organization based in London, claims Iran will use the second highest number of capital punishments after China, with at least 314 executions scheduled for 2021.
