ROME: A motion urging Iran to respect women's rights and end its crackdown on peaceful protesters was unanimously approved by the Italian Senate's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday.

The motion was made by the chair of the committee, Senator Stefania Craxi. He told Arab News that "all parties fully supported my text." It reflects the unanimity with which the Italian Parliament has condemned the barbarity perpetrated by the Tehran regime in the wake of Mahsa Amini's murder.

In September, a 22-year-old girl was flogged by Iran's morality police for allegedly wearing a hijab. The resolution required the Italian government to "push the Iranian regime, directly and at every multilateral forum, to immediately cease repression and violence".

Along with other EU member states, the text further commits the government of Giorgia Meloni's cabinet to "continue its intensive diplomatic and persuasive work to ensure that the Iranian authorities respect their own citizens and minorities in that country". protect human rights". Craxi said, "We all need to act as soon as possible to prevent the possibility of new executions against protesters who have been detained and tried in recent months."

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reiterated his "strong condemnation of the use of capital punishment as a tool in the crackdown on protests" in his remarks to the committee before the vote.
