Baghdad: In an attack on protesters in Baghdad, Iraq, 23 people lost their lives and a large number of people were injured. This has been revealed in the latest official figures. However, despite the attack, people did not stop the anti-government protest on Saturday. A source in Iraq's interior affairs ministry told the media that unidentified assailants opened fire on demonstrators on al-Khalani Square on Friday, injuring 135 people.

The attackers entered the convoy of vehicles at the protest site and started indiscriminate firing on the people who had gathered for the demonstration there. Al-Khalani is on the side of a multi-story parking garage, which has been occupied by protesters since the current mobilization that began two months ago. It is also near Tahrir Square, which has been the center of the movement that led Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi to resign earlier.

Even after these attacks, the protesters have not been cold and they continued to protest on Al-Khalani Square and Tahrir Square demanding reforms. Iraqi President Barham Salih strongly condemned the 'armed criminal attack of criminal gangs', although he did not name any group.
