BAGHDAD, Iraq: The Turkish military action in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region is a threat to the country's national security and a violation of its sovereignty, according to Iraqi officials.

The latest Turkish military operation into Iraqi territory without coordination with the Iraqi federal government is unacceptable, according to a statement released by the Presidency on Tuesday, as per reports. The ongoing security difficulties along the border might be resolved with more cooperation between the two countries, and Iraqi sovereignty must be respected, according to the statement.

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar announced on Monday that Turkish soldiers had initiated a new land and air cross-border operation in northern Iraq against the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Turkish forces carry out ground operations, airstrikes, and artillery bombardments against PKK terrorists' locations in northern Iraq on a regular basis, particularly in the Qandil mountain region, where the PKK's main bases are located.
