Baghdad: The launch place of drones that targeted Prime Minister Mustafa al-residence Kadhimi's in the Green Zone has been identified, according to Iraqi state TV report. "The two drones that struck the Prime Minister's home were launched from an area 12 kilometres northeast of Baghdad," said Yahia Rasoul, Spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of Iraqi Forces.

"The terrorist assassination attempt was properly planned," Rasoul claimed, adding that the two drones flew at a low height to avoid being detected by radars. According to accounts, al-Kadhimi escaped unscathed from an armed drone assassination attempt on his home in the heavily protected Green Zone, which houses some of the Iraqi government's important offices as well as foreign embassies. The murder attempt occurred amid protests by supporters of political parties who were unhappy with the election results in October.

The protests erupted into a battle with police forces at the Green Zone's entrances on Friday, killing two protesters and injuring dozens of security personnel and protesters. The Sadrist Movement, led by prominent Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, won more than 70 seats in the Parliamentary elections on October 10, while the al-Fatah (Conquest) Coalition, which includes some paramilitary Hashd Shaabi troops, received 17 seats, down from 47 in the 2018 elections.
