Iran: Negotiations to resurrect Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers will fail unless US President Joe Biden can guarantee that the US will not abandon the deal again, according to the head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.

"Because he lacks authority, the US President is unable to provide assurances. If the current situation persists, the outcome of negotiations will be obvious "In a tweet, Ali Shamkhani said. Iran is expected to announce an exact date for the resumption of talks with the powers this week, according to Ali Bagheri-Kani, Iran's top nuclear negotiator.

Iran and six world powers began talks in Vienna in April to re-establish the deal, which was scrapped three years ago by then-US President Donald Trump before reimposing sanctions that have crippled Iran's economy. However, after anti-Western hardliner Ebrahim Raisi was elected president of Iran in June, the talks were put on hold. Iran's demand that the US provide guarantees that it would not renege on the nuclear agreement in the future has been a major source of contention in Vienna.

The US and European powers have urged Iran to resume talks, warning that time is running out because the Islamic Republic's uranium enrichment programme is progressing far beyond the nuclear pact's limits. Tehran broke the deal by rebuilding stockpiles of enriched uranium, refining it to higher fissile purity, and installing advanced centrifuges to speed up output in response to Trump's reimposition of sanctions.
