Doctors from Karnataka has observed a damage on the thyroid glands of people by the deadly coronavirus. The doctors have found few patients have developed inflammation in the gland leading abnormal production of the hormone,  very less or very high levels of growth and metabolism hormones.  A Chinese analysis said the more severe the form of Covid, the lower the levels was of TSH and triiodothyronine.

Dr Anoop Amarnath, head of the scientific board at Manipal Hospital said that TSH levels drop in 5-10% of Covid patients in the state. Low TSH levels alongside high levels of T3 and T4 hormones are signs of hyperthyroidism. Further reduction leads to coma. Doctor added,  “It is advisable that T3, T4 and TSH levels are checked. There have been cases of Sick Euthyroid Syndrome, which are characterised by low T3 and normal TSH, reflecting the fact that normal hormonal feedback is deregulated in critical illness".

People suffering from thyroid disorders were more prone to complications, though there is no solid evidence that illness is due to COVID-19. Dr Subrata Das, senior consultant of internal medicine at Sakra World Hospital said, “The patients have increased tremors, joint pain, increased heart rate, and fatigue and increased feelings of hunger. Medication is given to reduce inflammation.”
