UAE: As the Islamic lunar year draws to a close with the end of Dhu Al Hijjah, the UAE prepares to welcome the new Hijri year, 1446 AH, starting with the month of Muharram. To mark the occasion, the UAE Cabinet has approved Muharram 1 as a public holiday.

When is Muharram 1? According to the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department, Muharram is expected to begin on Saturday, June 6, pending moon sighting. This follows the completion of the 29-day Dhu Al Hijjah, which concludes on Friday.

In a recent announcement, the UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) confirmed that Sunday, July 7, will be observed as an official paid holiday for private sector employees across the UAE. This decision aims to honor the significance of the Islamic New Year and allow individuals to celebrate with their families and communities.

Joining in the commemoration, Oman has also declared July 7 as a holiday for both public and private sector employees on the occasion of the Islamic New Year.

Looking ahead, the UAE will observe additional holidays this year, including the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on Rabi Al Awwal 12, as well as National Day holidays on December 2 and 3.

This announcement underscores the UAE’s commitment to respecting cultural and religious observances, fostering unity, and promoting work-life balance among its diverse population.
