Beirut: A war monitor reported that early on Monday, Israel's army shelled a pro-Iran group's position in southern Syria close to the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, marking the second such attack in recent days.

Without mentioning any casualties, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that "Israeli ground forces" bombarded a location outside of Quneitra where Syrian Resistance to Liberate the Golan fighters were stationed.

The Hezbollah-affiliated, Iran-supported group was established to conduct attacks in the territory that Israel occupies.

The bombardment was not covered by Syrian state media, but two government-affiliated local media outlets did report a "Israeli aggression" that targeted the Quneitra suburbs.

According to the Observatory, the Israeli army bombed positions in the Quneitra countryside on April 18 while aiming for regions that were home to organisations with ties to Iran and without causing any casualties.

Israel began attacking Syria earlier this month amid an uptick in regional violence after several rockets fired from Syria landed in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The 1,200 square kilometre (460 square mile) area, which is surrounded by Lebanon and is patrolled by Israeli troops, was taken from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War.

Later, Israel occupied it through an act that was never acknowledged by the international community.
Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes on Syrian territory over the course of the country's more than ten-year civil war, primarily focusing on Iranian-backed forces, Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, and Syrian army positions.

Israel has repeatedly stated it will not permit its arch-enemy Iran to expand its influence in the conflict-torn nation, despite the fact that it rarely comments on the strikes it conducts on Syria.

Five years after rebel fighters had taken it over, the Syrian army reclaimed control of the southern portion of Quneitra in the middle of 2018.
