Israel's Embassy in India has encouraged its citizens to consider India as a tourist destination after the Maldives government announced a ban on Israeli tourists. The decision by Maldives came as a show of solidarity with Gaza amid ongoing airstrikes by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF).

In response to the ban, the Israeli Embassy took to social media to promote Indian beaches as an alternative destination for Israeli tourists. "Since the Maldives is no longer welcoming Israelis, here are some beautiful and amazing Indian beaches where Israeli tourists are warmly welcomed and treated with utmost hospitality," the Embassy said in a post on X.

The post included recommendations for popular beach destinations such as Goa, Kerala, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, known for their serene and picturesque beaches.

This move by the Israeli Embassy comes at a time when relations between India and Maldives have strained following the election of President Mohamed Muizzu, who has shown a close affinity to China and demanded the withdrawal of Indian troops from the island nation.

Echoes of India's Boycott

Interestingly, Israel's response mirrors India's approach to dealing with the Maldives in the past. Earlier this year, after Maldivian ministers used abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, there was a trending boycott of the Maldives in India. Many cancelled their holiday plans, and tourism-related companies suspended their services in the country.

During this period, India's own beach destinations like Lakshadweep saw a surge in visitors, demonstrating support for the boycott call. The impact of India's actions was palpable, with a Maldives minister recently urging Indians to participate in their tourism activities, highlighting the economic importance of tourism to the country.

"We have a history. Our newly elected government also wants to work together [with India]. We always promote peace and a friendly environment. Our people and the government will give a warm welcome to Indian arrivals," said Maldives Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal.

India's promotion of Lakshadweep and other beach destinations during the boycott period led to increased interest in those locations, benefiting the local economies and tourism industry.
