The Israeli military has issued a warning for Lebanese civilians to evacuate villages where Hezbollah stores weapons, signaling a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict that has lasted 11 months. Following a series of extensive strikes targeting Hezbollah's infrastructure, the situation has intensified since the Hamas attacks on Israel last October.
On Monday, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the Israeli military, advised civilians to leave areas used by Hezbollah for military purposes, including weapon storage sites. A map was shared showing 17 villages in southern Lebanon, although specific targets were not disclosed.
This evacuation order comes after Israel's recent clandestine operations that disrupted Hezbollah's communication networks, along with a rare airstrike in Beirut that targeted a location where senior Hezbollah commanders were meeting. Despite these efforts, Hezbollah has maintained its position and escalated its own military actions.
Over the weekend, Hezbollah launched missile strikes that reached approximately 30 miles south of the Israeli border—its most significant attacks since the war's inception. This response followed Hezbollah's initial support for Hamas after the attacks on October 7, resulting in ongoing exchanges of fire and widespread destruction along the border, leading to the evacuation of around 150,000 people on both sides.
While Hezbollah has refrained from initiating a full-scale ground war, it has stated that it will continue to launch rockets until a ceasefire is achieved in Gaza. As prospects for peace diminish, Israel appears determined to conduct more aggressive strikes aimed at separating Hezbollah's actions from those of Hamas. However, Hezbollah's leadership remains resolute, with Hassan Nasrallah recently affirming their commitment to fight while the conflict in Gaza persists.
