NEW DELHI: Ron Malka, a former Israeli ambassador to India, has been named executive chairman of the Haifa Port Company (HPC), a joint venture between Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) and the Gadot Group of Israel.
The news was confirmed by the former ambassador in a tweet on Sunday. On behalf of @AdaniOnline, he stated, "I'm honoured and privileged to take office today as Executive Chairman of the Haifa Port Company. Haifa Port will reach new heights of success thanks to the knowledge and know-how of Adani and Gadot as well as the commitment of the port employees.
In July 2022, Gautam Adani's company Adani Ports and its local business partner, the chemical and logistics major Gadot, won the bid to privatise Israel's Haifa Port.
The Adani Group has paid $1.2 billion for the important Israeli port of Haifa amidst fraud claims made by Hindenburg Research. According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the agreement was a "enormous milestone." He also said that the agreement will greatly enhance connectivity between the two nations in numerous ways.
Israel's Ambassador to India Naor Gilon also called strategic port of Haifa to the Adani Group a reflection of the trust that it has in India. The Haifa port project has strategic value besides being a vital expansion of its operations by the Adani group. The company has also been awarded a contract to build a container terminal at Colombo port.
