Shri Hari Kota: The LVM3-M3/OneWeb India-2 mission of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has been launched with 36 satellites.

The mission was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh on India's largest Launch Vehicle Mark-III (LVM3) rocket.

In addition to placing OneWeb's satellites into low Earth orbit (LEO), the launch will help the company complete construction of its satellite constellation to offer international Internet services.

UK-based OneWeb last year signed a deal with NewSpace India Ltd, the commercial launch arm of ISRO, to launch 72 satellites into LEO. At a cost of Rs. 1,000 crore, it was planned to be completed in two phases.

In October 2022, the first group of 36 satellites was deployed, and now the second group of the remaining 36 has been launched.

The countdown for the LVM3-M3/OneWeb India-2 mission began on Saturday and was launched at 9 am today. 36 satellites weighing 5,805 kg were part of the payload of the 43.5 m tall LVM3 rocket at the time of launch.

They will be placed in a circular orbit about 450 km in diameter with an inclination of about 87.4 degrees. This is ISRO's second launch of the year, after the SSLV-D2/EOS07 mission in February.

With the OneWeb India-2 mission, the LVM3 rocket, formerly known as the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle MkIII, makes its sixth flight (GSLVMkIII).
It participated in five direct ISRO missions including Chandrayaan-2. OneWeb launches today for the 18th time and third time this year. The first generation of the company's LEO satellite constellation to provide worldwide Internet services has been rolled out.

OneWeb released a statement outlining the achievement. “Launch 17 is complete. There is still one important launch left, OneWeb Launch 18. We will have 616 satellites in orbit, which is more than enough to launch global services later this year, when we join forces with our partners. Also launching 36 other satellites later this week. ISRO and NewSpace India Ltd." The mission was, according to the firm, one of the company's "most important milestones".

Broadband Internet access is provided by OneWeb satellites, which are placed in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at an altitude of 1,200 km. This differs from other operators which perform the same task by positioning satellites in geostationary orbits (GEO) above the equator.

LEO satellite placement improves bandwidth and reduces space latency. Later this year, the company intends to start offering its services in India.
