KOLKATA: A delegation from the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), which recently conducted an assessment of Jadavpur University's campus to explore technological solutions to address the issue of ragging, has recommended harnessing artificial intelligence as an effective means to curb this menace.

Confirming this development, interim Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, Buddhadeb Sau, affirmed that ISRO's initial suggestion emerged during their preliminary campus survey conducted on Tuesday, encompassing a comprehensive examination of various locations within the sprawling campus.

Sau stated, "The ISRO team may revisit our campus in the near future, during which they will provide a detailed and definitive recommendation on employing technology to prevent ragging within our academic institution."

The initiative to engage ISRO in this matter was spearheaded by Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, particularly in the wake of a tragic incident involving the ragging-related death of a freshman at a student hostel within the university on August 10. Governor Bose personally engaged in a telephonic dialogue with ISRO's senior officials, thereby ensuring the team's visit to Jadavpur University.

Meanwhile, insiders at Jadavpur University disclosed that, based on initial discussions with the ISRO delegation, the prevalence of ragging incidents on campus could be substantially mitigated through the implementation of technology such as video analytics and targeted intervention methods.

"They concur that technology should be seamlessly integrated to complement the academic environment and reputation of our esteemed university," shared a faculty member from Jadavpur University.

Coincidentally, on the same Tuesday, Jadavpur University's internal investigation committee, which was examining the freshman's tragic demise, submitted its internal report. The committee recommended the immediate expulsion of four current university students and advised the university authorities to file police complaints against six former students who were present at the student hostel during the unfortunate incident.
